Slight knocking at 4000 rpm, what octane should I use

1974 Cobalt, 165HP OMC, 14 X 14p prop. WOT tops out at 4500 rpm. We ran for a while today at 4000, and I started noticing a slight knock. Two possible issues/solutions that come to mind are: 1 - use a higher octane fuel (currently using 85) 2 - timing could be slightly out and need to...

1974 OMC 165 HP Optimal RPM @ WOT

Still learning about the '74 Cobalt we bought. It has a 165 hp, 6 cyl, 2 brl with OMC Cobra Stringer outdrive. Top RPM on the lake earlier this week was 3800 rpm @ WOT. What should the ideal max. rpm be? Seems low to me. Dave

    OMC Hard Steering/Pulling to Port

I have a 1974 Cobalt 18' TriHull, 165 HP Chev, OMC outdrive. While running, it's hard to steer the boat to starboard (tight) and it wants to turn to port on it's own. It appears to steer fully from one side to the other. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful!! Dave

What should RPM's be at WOT

I have a 4 cyl, 120HP Merc engine with pre-alpha outdrive. It's in a 1968, 16.5' HydroSwift V-hull boat. I use it mostly for cruising, tubes with the family and just tried a knee board this past weekend. I'm curious as to what the ideal RPM should be at WOT. I think my set up is under...

Boat: 1968 Hydroswift 16.5 ft, Mercruiser 120, 4 cyl, PreAlpha Merc outdrive I bought this boat last year and had the gimbal bearing, shift cables replaced along with all of the bellows. I winterized the boat (so I thought). This year before using the boat for the first time, I was checking...

    1968 16' Hydroswift

We are fairly new members here and definitely new to owning a boat. About 6 weeks ago we purchased a 1968 16' Hydroswift boat from a local seller for $1100.00. It has an inline 4 cyl. Mercruiser 120 engine and a Mercruiser 120 (pre-Alpha) outdrive. The prop is a 15 1/4" X 15 pitch...

    Lost Forward gear-reverse still works

We were testing the new tachometer we installed today. We got data on the first prop and headed back to the marina to change props, slowed in the dock area and suddenly, no forward gear but reverse still worked. We used reverse to get to the load/unload area and took it out of the water and...

    Newbie Question #2 - Tachometer

I had the boat out on Pineview Reservoir yesterday with the family. I've been trying to determine if I have on the right propeller but needed some information for the prop recommendation sites. Here's what I recorded: Tachometer: 2600 rpm Speed (GPS): 26.4 mph Drive...

    Newbie Question-Outdrive Operation

We just purchased our first boat and we are learning as we go. It's a 1968 Hydroswift with a Mercruiser 120, 4 cyl I/O power train. Today's question is: the outdrive controller (up by the steering) has three buttons UP Down/In Out (the middle button has both down & in on it). The...
