    1966 Johnson 9.5hp (MQ-12A)

The early motors with the shaking that Crosbyman was referring to are the 1964/65 models. Dad had a '65 from new & later had it retrofitted with a special "Vibration Isolation Kit" installed at the dealer waaayy back. I've piloted many 9½ OMC turtlebacks but dad's well-used motor was actually...

    New motor!

I'd be curious as to the prop you are using on the 6. Those motors from 1966 through 1979 can use the same props (1965 6 & the earlier 5½ used a different prop due to the new slip-hub) and with the long run they enjoyed they offered a larger diameter lower pitch version that would be good for...

What thinketh the membership here..... Useful or just hype

A very simple addition we used on our old E-Z Loader trailer were non-skid strips along the frame where you might step during loading. It probably saved my teeth at some point.

'69 johnson hydro electric shift V4

I admire your determination Maxwell. Your motor looks like a decent example. You are getting great advice from experienced members here. Better yet, it is free. Also, good luck with your exams!

    1947 Johnson HD 25

Watch for excessive clearance on the bearings. For a bronze bushed motor, especially a rotary-valve type such as the HD it relegates it to display purposes. It'll never run right if worn out, and since they are hand-reamed, they don't have the possibility of replaceable bearing inserts to...

Engine color codes- 62 Johnson “warm white.”

Technically those motors are 2-tone, although you don't tend to notice unless you look. The powerhead, midsection & lower unit are a dirty white called "French Silver", part # was 172744, while the cowl is "Warm White" part # was 172750

1976 Evinrude - Metal vs. plastic water pump housing?

I thought that OMC originally sold metal pump housings as "H.D. Chrome Water Pump" for silt-laden or salt water. I've got one new in the box for my 9½. I am guessing the stock aluminum housing & the chrome version aren't the same thing. Mine looks cast & iridescent, not shiny like bumper chrome.

    Revived 3hp Johnson!

It is rewarding to get one of these running. They are smooth & sweet little motors. Dad bought one brand new like yours, a 1967 3-horse folding weedless, and didn't even use it until it was 8 years old. The weedless skeg works like a charm in the weeds. The pressed aluminum fuel tank on the...

    Help IDing a Johnson

The gas tank from the 5.5 can be used on a 9.9. Other than that... Even the spark plugs are different. Maybe the drain & fill plugs from the lower unit can be?

    1954 10HP Johnson crank question

It appears from the diagram that the o-ring (7) sets in the groove in the middle of the bearing (8). It probably has to stretch A LITTLE to fit snug.

    1970 4HP Johnson

Oops, I blew it during the last edit due to technical difficulties. For 1964 OMC (Johnson Evinrude Gale) started claiming all their motors ran the new 50:1 TCW-1 grade 2-cycle oil (that OMC started selling that year, made by Castrol). It was true for fully roller bearing motors. The 3-horse...

    1970 4HP Johnson

For 1964 OMC (Johnson Evinrude Gale) started claiming all their motors ran the new 50:1 TCW-1 grade 2-cycle oil (that OMC started selling that year, made by Castrol). It was true for fully roller bearing motors. The 3-horse became the 4 but was only partially fitted with roller bearings through...

    What year

I concur it sure looks like a 1975 model, and a fine motor overall. The 20 was not available in the U.S in 1975 but it was in Canada with a built-in 45 watt a/c generator.

    1975 6HPs (Models 6504/6505) -- how does the '75 vintage compare?

1966 as was said, the drive pin was relocated. The bigger picture is that they switched from a shock absorber in the lower unit to a splined prop shaft. Just so you couldn't run an early non-spline prop on a later non shock absorber lower unit (or vise-versa) they purposely made it so props...

    td 20 cooling system

Here's a picture of the pee-stream exposed with the lower shroud removed. Mine is a TN but a TD & TS also have the same tell-tale water outlet despite the fundamental water pump differences. The water comes out of a controlled orifice below the nut on the water pipe, shown below.

Floor replacement in a 72 Starcraft Supersport

Looking at the 1968 & 1974 Starcraft brochures I see that the wooden floor sits on aluminum ribs that seem to run longitudinally. There are also lateral aluminum ribs but they may be for hull strength rather than floor support IMHO. Only on the fiberglass boats are there wooden stringers and...

    SeaHorse HD25

Being an HD-25 would make it a post-war motor. It would be a 1946-1950 model 2? horse. They made an HD-26 in 1951 before those old rotary valve 2-stroke motors were replaced by a reed-valve 3-horse for 1952, the start of the great JW series. Are the original paint & decals still on the motor...

    62 evinrude 5.5hp tiller arm

Yes, the water level needs to be no lower than the red line shown on the attachment below. At least when starting, or when running in a bucket. During normal operation when the motor is running through the water and the boat is up on a plane, water is getting scooped by the pickup on the...
