Yep that hourly rate is good but I would inquire further on more specifics on exactly what else they may be doing because for just the ujoint bellows that seems a bit high.

OEM or Sierra is the way to go.
Search here on Mallory and you'll find guys that have had issues with that brand. Now exactly if the impellers are inferior as some of the other parts I can't be...
I also take some of that really fine emery paper/cloth and use that on those pins to help smooth them out first before putting on some grease.

You're leaving something out. That engine, in single form, was not a valid engine for a boat that big (yes, I have one) so either you listed the wrong engine or you have twins in which case, what was...
..yea, and some of us (well, maybe just me) trying to start who are already on the north side of 50 in the twilight years who have learned that critical tools include paper towels and band-aids...and...
a 1/2" allen key works instead of the hinge tool...
Keep the reservoir

Here's a link to some videos Chris did that may help you realize pulling the drive is not that hard to do if you have some mechanical skills and can follow steps:...
Here you go.......

When I bought the complete Merc. anode kit for my gen2 a hex style bolt was included.

Skipjacks have a long term great reputation here in SoCal for many, many years.
A lot of guys take that model out to Catalina, Clemente and the other islands in search of the bigger fish.

Welcome to IBOATS.
Sometimes those lube fittings/hoses necessitate removal of the drive to provide access to where you might need to get to.
Here's a link to the service manual to investigate...
West Marine sells them; even had a choice between OEM and Sierra at 1/2 the cost.
I bought some extras for my boat.
Mark
It looks like you're missing the water pump face seal on top of the housing; or did you remove it?
Mark
No, you need to pull the drive.
May even need to split the halves and plug with a rubber cork the oil passage hole between the 2 halves if need be.
Here's a link from the sticky section...
That's it right there just what he said.
If YOU like the boat, is exactly what you've been looking for and gets checked out mechanically to your satisfaction then toss any of the guides out the...
When you drained the gear lube did you see any water coming out?
Seems like you'd want to drain the lube, pull the drive and do a pressure test and see what that shows.
Mark
Nope; B3 is one heavy piece of gear.
While it's pretty feasible to take off yourself, having a helper with you putting it back on is a good idea.
I built a "rolling stand" to the height of just...
That's so true right there.
I "set the expectation" ahead of time with the invite on when the estimated time of departure is and the expected time back to the dock. I let them know if that time...
Glad to hear it. That dealer good to deal with? Happy with them it seems you are?

Post #59 above, step 2 of the procedure Don posted says to do that which is extracted from service manual 14 page 1b-12.

So you're saying the engine and outdrive are great and you used it a dozen times and like the way it ran just don't like the interior?
Then when you find out the stringers need replacing you...
The few shops around here I've been in do both. They have an hourly shop rate but also will have a "set" price for standard type of maintenance items to be done.
If they finish quicker they make...
Not sure why that guy said that as here is a link where you can see the capacity info (page 13-14) for a1g2 is 2 qts with a round bottle and 1.75 for the rectangle type:...
Having an engine serial number helps along with knowing if you are straight raw water cooled or closed cooling as the water flow path is obviously different.
A 2001 350-bravo tells me you could...
Good attitude. Read, read some more, read only the Merc. official service manuals as the others are not clear, watch videos-especially the ones here on IBOATS, try and put the pieces together and if...
Welcome to IBOATS
Here's a link where you can plug in a Merc. serial number and start getting acquainted with parts diagrams.

You'll be huntin' for a lot more parts than just the drive trying to go from an MC1 to a Bravo....do a little searching here for other guys who thought about doing that.

My Maxum was that way. To get the front of the trailer down as far as possible when I wanted to change the gear oil, once the trailer jack would go no lower, I put a floor jack under the tongue,...
That is correct having it down in.
By pumping from the bottom (fill) hole you will be pushing the air up and out; first the vent hole then the bottle.
Mark
a1g2 with lube monitor it is trimmed all the way up/out.
Take a read of the manual starting on 1b-11 for checking oil then 1b-12 starts the procedure....
Just seems like it had not all drained out before you removed the drive. It will drain from the bottle to the lower and out the fill hole.
You might get just a little oil dribble out but should...
Looks like a couple different kinds of growth and hardened salt to me.
Good cleaning should take care of it.
Mark
Once at the vent hole, screw the vent plug in while still pumping and once the bottle is about half full, remove the fill hose, put the fill screw in then top off the bottle.
Make sure the cap is...
Seems like the boat type and engine type would be as big, or bigger of a factor wouldn't it?
My 454 will be in gear and I think be around 700-800 rpm and weighing 9000+ pounds doesn't move real...
I use a Simrek on my B3 and their site does mention all alphas but nothing before that.
You called or emailed them and asked the question and they say it won't fit?
Mark
Good information to have.
Thanks.
Mark
I've got a 27 foot Sundancer and love the 454/B3 combo.
My spedo don't start until 10mph and in gear just above idle doesn't register; I would think you should have no issues trolling.
Mark
Thanks for the update. That's great news they are replacing 3 with 1.
I'll make sure I buy the new stuff when any of mine run out.

Maybe to help clarify his question or put another way:
If he is pulling the drive 1 a year and greasing the splines that way, how often and how much should it be done until the next season?
Or are...
If you were to see an ad for an early 70's Aero Commander 685 for $15000 and even though the ad sounded great, would you really believe it?
Prices can vary across the county but here in SoCal,...
Using the below link, you can see that indeed the engine is a 1990 and the drive is an alpha1:

Do you have someone to help watch for water flow out the relief ports or to start the engine while you watch for water flow?
I always try and have someone watch for the water flow as if you don't...
Just want to make sure you know not to try and start the boat until you have a functioning blower or the engine hatch raised, getting plenty of air/ventilation and smelling that there are no gas...
Depends on if you do it or pay someone but the real danger here could be other damage done by not having it replaced and all the costs associated with getting it ship-shape again.

You mean the water circulating pump on the front of the engine right?
You mentioned that you did run it at a point with water but then later without the hose so I would think the water circulating...
Welcome to IBOATS.
Bummer. As indicated above, don't bother testing, just replace.
Based upon the year and info provided, you should need service manual #6 for the drive:

You should have some 12v plugs in addition to the regular "home" type plugs so depending on what you are looking to plug in, may need to find an "RV" type 12v equivalent.
