I have a 98' Johnson 200 outboard. Model number J200PLEEN. On my last outing I noticed a fast idle and frequent stalling when trying to trailer it. I replaced the plugs, fuel filter and lower unit grease as well as greased the steering and trim stuff. Now starts great and runs great just can't get it to idle down. Immediately hits 2000RPM on start and stays there. Gas is about 3.5 months old. What esle can I do?? Engine has about 100 hrs on it. Using champion plugs gapped at .030 per owners manual.

Welcome!

Are you starting it in or out of the water?

Are you waiting for it to warm up so it comes out of Quick Start?

Are the thermostats in?

Re: 1998 Johnson 200 fast idle

I am now starting it out of water with the muffs on it. I am waiting for quick start but it does not seem to ever kick in. How long should I wait? Not sure about the thermostats I am new at this can you explain?

Re: 1998 Johnson 200 fast idle

If the thermostats are out it may take a very long time to warm up on the hose. The motor will idle quite a bit higher out of the water on muffs than in the water because of backpressure.

What kind of water pressure are you showing on your gauge?

BTW -- congrats on having a newer motor than you thought -- its a 1999.

Thanks, I noticed that after I posted I found a page taht explained the model number apparently EE equates to 99. I am going to take it to the lake this weekend see what happens. I'll follow up if I need to. Thanks for the assistance, excellent forum.
