My motor is stuck in the up position. This motor has a power assist. A cable runs from a "shock" to a plastic piece to a lever. The plastic piece that connects the cable to the lever broke. I had it replaced but the motor still will not go down unless we disconnect the "shock". The "shock" is fine. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it.

Is it a hydraulic system or does it just use the cable?

The cable connects to a hydraulic "shock". When I bought the boat they called it tilt assist. Any ideas????

If shock went up too far it may have sprung the shaft in the shock just enough to not allow the fluid in the shock to bypass or drift down or maybe the replaced plastic lever was not positioned in the right place. Wild guesses but you might want to check them out! Good luck! By the way, walleye is good eating!! Docked Johnson(Doc)

Re: 48 special Johnson_ tilt trim

Thanks for the suggestions Doc. I know the shock is fine because when the cable was loose you could make the shock go up and down. I think the plastic piece needs to be adjusted because that's where my problem originally started. What confuses me is that my boat is in the shop now and they can't seem to fix it either. Isn't this something you would have to adjust when you install a motor? Last week the shop called to say, "The motor was fixed and although a little stiff worked fine. And if they fixed it right it would cost a lot more." That meant more than the $873.30 they were already charging. Anyway when I got there I found that the motor wasn't stiff it was frozen. Just like I left it. The manager said he was too busy to come out and take a look. Does anyone have any suggestion about the motor and how to deal with this boat shop?

Re: 48 special Johnson_ tilt trim

If this shock is a hydrolic cylinder OMC tilt and trim system type it should have a bleeder valve on it somewhere. It may have gotten air in it or the fluid isn't going where it needs to go. Even tho it moves up and down when you take the cable off. Look for some type of bleeder valve. There is a section in our Johnson manual that tells how to check it that might help you even if yours isn't exactly like the book you might get some ideas. Our book is a Selock Johnson/Evinrude Repair manual which we ordered from iboats and it is very good. We also found them at O'Reileys automotive if you don't want to wait. As for the lousy boat shop, we have found very nice mechanics around the lake near the marinas that have parts cheaper than in our own town by half the price. I would take them to small claims court if I didn't get satisfaction any other way or chock it up to bad experience. In our book, it says trailering the boat with the trim up and unsupported can cause a lock up and to relieve the lockup loosen one trim cylinder end cap a quarter of a turn with a socket type spanner wrench, then operate the unit down then up slightly and that bleeds the air out of them and reposition the fluid, tighten the end cap back. Don't know if this is your type but maybe this will help. You may have to do this procedure several times to bleed it completely. Make sure to check for all bent rods around your tilt and trim area, because that may be what's hanging it up and they don't have to be very bent to do so. Good luck, keep us posted!!

Does that cable have any adjustment, screw the end on more or anything. Sounds like the cable is a little too long.
