My friend has just purchased a New 2006 Bayliner 175 with a Mercruiser 3.0L inboard Carb engine sorry do not have serial no. There is some confusion between the dealer whether it needs a 20hr service. The owners manual seems to state only 100hrs but the running in period is still 20hrs. I thought they had a cutting oil in and needed a 20hr service. Are Mercruiser different from the VP's?

Unless things have changed it should get a 20 hour service

With fluid changes and drive alignment check ,Its the only way your going to find any small problems before they become BIG ones

It seems like a lot of places blow off the alignment, BUT whos gonna pay in the long run if it's slowly eating the coupling :)

tommays

I bought the same boat 2005 model, tell me what does it hurt? I changed the oil after 20 hrs. But didnt pay much attn. to the break in period.
Break it in like your gonna drive it!!Hasnt hurt a thing. The 20 hr. oil change is just preventive maint. Small price to pay.... Just my opinion, could be corrected tho................ ;)

The 20 hour service is NOT required by Volvo, or Mercruiser anymore. While it is a nice thing to do for your engine and drive, it's not a requirement nor will it void your warranty if it's not done. I could be wrong, but I don't think Volvo or Merc either one even has a 20 hour service listed anymore.
Look in your owners manual. If you have questions, look in your warranty manual and give Volvo a call.
To re-answer your question, NO, you do not have to take it in for a $375 service.
On a brand new boat, there is nothing wrong with doing an oil change, and a gear lube change at 20 hours. Pulling the drive and checking the alignment on a BRAND NEW Boat is also a good thing, along with checking belt tensions, hose clamps and in general looking over the engine/drive package and looking for any problems.
It's all new, and nothing wrong with a shake down inspection...... But, it's not required.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0L Does it need 20hr service

The service department at my dealer stated that there was no need to bring my 04' 3.0 in for a 20 hour service. I currently have 19 hours ont he boat. The service manager said, "see you at 100 hours". My dealership has a good rep. of being an honest place. I have changed out the oil/filter at 2 and 15 hours and have done the same with the lower unit oil. Also greased all fittings and checked clamps on hoses. Glad I switched out the oil at 2 hours, sent it off for an oil analysis from Blackstone and there was a ton of Silicon in the sample. Blackstone advised it was due to the manufacturing process and a not too clean factory. They were very happy I changed out the oil when I did. Save the 375 dollars and spend 20 dollars on an oil analysis, nothing will tell you more about what is going on inside your engine. Hope this info. helps.
