Question about Outdrive failure

I am looking at buying a 1989 16.5' Forester. The boat looks in excellent condition. The owner said that the outdrive unit "has failed". I don't have any idea what this involves, and am wondering if this would be very expensive to fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Question about Outdrive failure

If you are mechanically inclined you could get the manuals and diagnose the problem yourself. It could be as simple as a spun coupler or as bad as all the gears are trashed. You need to check the engine, too. If you are not mechanically inclined you could pay a mechanic to diagnose it and give you a quote on fixing it. Or you could buy a new Merc outdrive, or a used Merc outdrive (be careful), or a new non-Merc outdrive. If you can confirm the outdrive is shot, price the boat, price the new outdrive of your choice, knock down the price accordingly including your hassle and risk factor, and make him an offer... if you want the boat and the hassle. I would think in this economy there should be lots of working boats available.

Re: Question about Outdrive failure

Thank you so much for the reply. I forgot to mention that it is an Inboard Motor, but I'm not sure if it's Volvo, Merc, or whatever. The reason I ask is that he wants $500 for it. I figured even if it costs some money to get it fixed, it's still a great deal...but again...I am not smart enough with these things to know if I am making a good decision or not. Assuming I needed to replace the outdrive, APPROXIMATELY what do you think this would cost as that would most likely be my decision to do it or not. Thanks for all your help guys!
