removing foot of '93 40hp Johnson

Trying to remove the foot of a '93 40hp Johnson to replace impeller. Have removed bolts, but do not know how loosen the shift rod. Thanks

Underneath tha carbs as far as I know. Some remove the carbs for better access, others use a long 1/4" extension with a universal joint on it. Make sure you have all the bolts out of the lower unit. Do you have a manual ??

Thanks, I removed the starter and was able to reach it that way. Now, how do I get the impeller back on the shaft, keeping that little shim in place?
