when cranking engine i get soft spark on one side spark plugs and no spark on other side once when engine tried to start (a short 1-2 second run) the side with no spark hit hard with spark for that 1-2 secs any ideas

Chief suspects are mercury tilt switch and kill circuit wiring. Disconnect the kill wires from both switchboxes and measure the resistance to ground. Should be very low with the ignition switch off, and infinity with the switch on. Trace out any fault.
