1996 150 V-6 Evinrude, frozen carrier bearing or threaded?

Does anyone know how the lower unit on a 1996 V-6 150 HP Evinrude comes apart? I'm trying to help a friend....
He's got the retaining bolts and keepers out.....now I'm thinking the carrier bearing should just slide out.....he says it just moves about a half inch and stops.
The shift rod is already removed......


Any ideas?
