I bought a 1996 Evinrude 40 HP ( E40TLEDS )from a neighbor who had it sitting in his garage for about 7 years. He claims (and it looks like) it only had maybe 50 hrs on it.
I have an intermittent (actually a now consistant) no spark. Here's what I've done (in chronological order)
Removed Black & Yellow safety switch wire from harness - no luck (it's still out)
Suspected Coil (one set had infinite resistance, one set had no resistance) and replaced it - No change
After reading forums and taking some readings replaced Power Pack - Motor would occasionnally start, but with no consistency. Found that pumping primer bulb would help so i..
Rebuilt carberator(s)and took apart fuel pump (it's the VRO style pump). The carbs were horrible, but are clean now, and the fuel pump looks like brand new, and appears to be fine (pumping th bulb worked because the bowls of the carbs looked like molassas). I believe the fuel system is fine. I really won't be ab;e to verify this until I get some sort of ignition.
I do NOT have a DVA meter, but I do have a digital multimeter that will save Min / Max voltages (just bought it). Will that work?
I took some voltage readings from the Stator (before I bought the meter) and wasn't getting the voltages as stated in my manual and from this forum ( http://www.boatpartstore.com/page32.asp). So i replaced it (yikes #240).. And no spark still!
Here's my questions and any suggestions are welcome.
1) Should the Min / Max readings on my (expensive) multimeter work, or do I have to suck it up and buy a DVA meter?
2) The last real ignition part I haven't replaced is the Timer Base, everything I've read says it could be that as well ($220 YIKES). Does this sound feasible? Is ther a good way to test the Timer Base?
3) Could the (New) Power Pack been taken out by a bad Stator /Timer Base? I ask this because it had been running, then after I removed the flywheel several times, it has completely stopped firing completely.
I have removed the Big Red Plug, and I have been using a remote starter, just to make sure the starter and throttle position sensor are out of the equation.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the summer up here in Michigan are too short not to have a boat this late in the season..
Thanks!
