I recently purchased a bass boat with a 1980 mercury 115 elpt on it. Testing the motor, it runs excellent in neutral with great throttle response. When shifted into gear it will run if the throttle is eased forward. If the throttle is not eased forward it will bog down and want to die. It doesnt seem to have complete full power at WOT when it runs. No problems at idle. Checked the primer bulb and it stays rock hard. Im not sure how old the fuel is. Im planning on changing the fuel and trying again. It has new spark plugs in it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1980 Mercury 115 ELPT Boggs Down

Had similar problem with my 1982 Merc 90. Same engine as yours, just lower performance version. Simple fix might be to open the idle mix screws a bit and see if it still boggs down. Try 1/4 turn on each and see what happens. If no help try another 1/4 turn each. If you can't get fixed doing this, you should get a manual and follow the timing and synchronization procedure. It's easy and all you really need is a timing light. I have a post going titled "1982 Merc 90 Link and Sync" that you should read. Used these procedures to get my engine running good.

Mine was doing the same last year and it was the carbs. I rebuilt them over the winter and it fixed the problem. The carbs are surprisingly easy to rebuild, not much to them.
