exhaust fumes, 8 hp merc

I have just purchased a 2000 8 HP Merc long shaft for my sailboat. I have an motor compartment in the back of the boat. I was thinking the thru prop exhaust would not cause fumes from coming back into the cocpit of the boat while in use, boy was I wrong. I there something I need to adjust or different type of oil "I am using what the book specs" OR that is just the way its going to be.

Im ready to sink my motor and use a trolling motor out of the channel!
