I have a 1991 50 hp Johnson and I cracked off about a 1'' x 1'' off the bottom fin which is the closest to the prop. Would that effect the performance of my motor. Should I just get a new piece welded on. Also I have this dial above my prop with numbers on it what's that for. Thanks

You can buy skeg repair kits. The "dial above the prop with numbers on it"
is probably the trim tab.

The trim tab counter acts the sideways torque of the prop so the boat will go straight without turning.

The skeg that you broke is really only there to protect the prop. If the skeg is now too short, you'll want to have is lengthened. If the skeg still protects the prop, you may want to just leave it.

is it the skeg or the AV Plate, that is broken. give it a test drive and see if it effected performance, it may just be fine. skeg is below the prop, AV plate is just above the prop.

It is the skeg that is below the prop. Would this effect my steering in any way or the balance of the motor, or cause any shake in my travel . Thanks
