25 Johnson fuel problem

My 2000 2 cyl Johnson 25 starts easily but will only run with the primer button open. Even when warmed up, once I close the primer button, after 5 -10 seconds it sputters and dies. If I leave the primer open it will idle smooth as silk all day. I bought a carb kit and cleaned out the carb, but I'm a novice at rebuilding carbs. Did I do something wrong? Anything obvious I'm missing?

Since we weren't there, could you describe how you "cleaned out" the carburetor? That phrase means different things to different people. It does sound like you still have carb problems, though.

I'm pretty confident the carb is squeaky clean. I am NOT confident that I put everything back together properly. This problem started after I cleaned the carbs and did a lync n' sync - not before. Thanks for your replies.

Sounds like your float is not working properly, unscrew the bowl drain plug to see if fuel comes out. It sounds like your float bowl is not filling with fuel or the needle valve is not functioning properly. Thats were I would start...

Update:
I put the old float,needle and seat BACK in the carb and motor runs fine.
Lesson of the day: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Did you verify the float level operation and setting after the new float and needle installed?

I Adjusted the float both times as per the shop manual. The only difference I see is that the needle that came with the kit has a red tip. I thought it was paint and tried to scrape it off but it is actually a rubber tip. The old one is all metal. At least I think it is. I'm not taking it apart again to find out. I'm going to leave well enough alone and quit while I'm ahead.

I hear you bro, I had an idle issue my self, my 25 wouldent idle at low speeds, decided to clean and rebuilt the carb with new needle, and now I got all sorts of problems, with the needle and seat and sticking etc....
