Does a 1994 Mercury have a rectifier, or just a terminal block ? Recently bought engine with taped off yellow and gray wires.
Thanks for Help :)

It probably has a voltage regulator. What model motor? Look uo your motor on the crowleymarine.com website and see what it has.

Yes it do'es and those wires should not be taped off.Gray is the tach lead and the 2 yellow wires are the charge wires comming from the stator. The rectifier/regulator changes the ac voltage created by the stator to dc voltage to charge the battery. There are service bulletins and updates on that stator that given the age of the unit might not be any help to you.It would be interesting to know why they're taped off.

Looking at my service manual it doesn't look like it has a rectifier, it does have the Voltage regulator on top of the engine. Does the new voltage regulators have the rectifier built in ?

Voltage regulators have the rectifier circuit built in. What motor do you have? V6 motors of that vintage have dual 20A VRs. These are located in the rear, center of the motor, and are air cooled

At the top front of your engine you will see a square 3by3 box with hopefully still green tinted potting.Kind of near the oil fill neck. That is the rectifier/regulator and it doe's both.If that little unit is all burnt up or missing that usually means that this thing has lost connection to the battery at some point while running.Smokes em really fast. That situation can also smoke the charging side of the stator too but the amount of smoke you get out the frying retifier, most people shut it off before that happens.Last I can remember that regulator was obsolete and only available in the update kit with the new stator but I have'nt done one in awhile and things change.Look under your flywheel at the windings .If they are red you are likely updated. If black, that could be painfull.
