I have just bought a fishing boat with a 1989 60 hp VRO Johnson. What's involved with doing away with the oil injection and going to mix?

if the fuel side is working fine, just unplug the sensor on the oil tank, and the VRO pump, cut the oil line about 3 inches from the motor connection plug and clamp it. the fuel side will continue to pump premixed fuel. also mix you fuel 50-1, then remove the fuel line to carb, and pump bulb, till you get mixed fuel there. the fuel will change colors.

Re: Doind away with the oil pump?

I guess my concern is wondering about the oil pump quitting and burning up the motor. I have a neighbor with a much newer johnson and his pump must have quit on his motor causing the crank or a rod to seize up or break. How much of a problem has this been over the years for Johnson motors.

Had Suzuki TS 250 motorcycle years ago that did the same thing and it was a mechanical pump.

Would you advise going to mix?

1989, advise to do as above, and premix fuel, or spend +- $400 for a new OMS pump to replace the VRO.

Be sure to disconnect and tape the wiring from the oil tank. Also disconnect and seal the 3 or 4 wire harness from the VRO pump to the main engine harness.

The VRO, VRO2 and the OMS pumps are all mechanical pumps; the only thing electronic is the warning system.

Your motor would have started life with a VRO2 pump. Here's the story: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html
