I have looked around for an answer to this but have not located one.

1988 Baretta Success AQ 151A dual carbs. Replaced - plugs, wires, condensor, capacitor, coil, and points. The engine will fire up and run when it wants to. I got fed up and gave it to my Dad who did some checking with a volt meter.

When the ignition switch is turned to on it shows 5 volts or 8 volts, then other times it shows 12.6 and the engine fires over and idles at 900 RPM. Again this is intermittent. Dad said the last time he checked with volt meter when turning the ignition switch to run there is 0 volts and whe turned off it registered 12.6. I hate nuisance problems prefer to replace a part and be on my way.

Any one have ideas? This is first power boat I have owned - unsure of breakers, the neutral safety switches, or a red button near solenoid that has 40A printed on it.

I bought the boat because engine only had 220 Hours and has 180 PSI per cylinder - barely used.

I really want to get the engine sorted out so I can sell the boat and get back to sailing.

Thanks in advance... BTW NEW floor, stringers with 2x2 cross bracing - VERY stiff.

These motors use an ignition ballast resistor. With ignition on/engine off the voltage reading at the small positive coil terminal will vary. If the points are closed you will see anywhere between 5 and 9 volts, if the points are open you will see battery voltage (12v). Clean your points (even if they are new) with a piece of thick paper/thin cardboard soaked in brakeleen, then recheck the gap. When she fires up, set the timing and check the dwell angle (very important), readjust the point gap to get the dwell within specifications.

You may have other issues but the above is a good diagnostic starting point.

The issue was basic novice errors.
1. Carb float too high - more fuel is not necesarily a good thing.
2. Helps to put heat shrink over condensor connection to points (shorted to dist inside.)
3. Distributor was one tooth off - DOH!!

My dad ran on single carb, then set up with second carb. Now the boat starts on first crank.

Now the belows needs replaced vovo 290 outdrive and she is good to go.

Many thanks for your assistance.

What is a Volvo Success worth - needs interior reupholstered has brand new front back seats. The side panels and bow needs new cushions.
Engine runs good and floor is solid.
