I am attempting to replace the bellows in my 1976 mercruiser stern drive. I belive it is a Type #1. I am trying to remove the two pins (nails) that keep the bell housing pins in place. Is there a trick to removing these pins? I tried pulling them out with pliers and vice grips to no avial. Once out do the pivot pins pull out or can the be driven through? The pivot pins have a threaded insert.

On the older units like yours you will need a hinge pin puller or slide hammer to remove the pins. Did you remove the nails in the hinge pin ? Might be a small bolt in the pin Mercruiser could not make up their mind back then.

I have been unable to get the nails out. I assumed that would be the easy part but it has turned into a problem. Is there an alternative plan to pulling them out the same way they went in? I have about a quarter inch to grab onto but I am affraid I will break that quarter inch off.

If I recall correctly mine were bent over like a bent nail.

I had to straighten the end nearest the bow out before it could pull it out.

marc c is correct. ya need to straighten out the nails from the ft. side of the gimble ring... then you can pull the nail out. theres a slot the nail bends into on the ft. side too so it's out of the way. a light slide hammer with i believe a 1/4-28 bolt can extract the hinge pins once the nails are removed. be carefull with your nails. there's small nails and large nails. the small nails best i know are nla....
