I have a 1988 Caravelle 16ft Bow Rider with a mercruiser 3.0 I/O. The prop that came with the boat is an aluminum 3B with 19" pitch. It seem like too much prop for the boat..how do I find out the correct prop to use on this boat..all I do is inshore fishing in Savannah Ga coastal waters.. speed is not a requirement. Thanx..

Re: Prop recommendation

I imagine this post will get moved to the props forum, but until then....

I think that prop should be ok, in fact nearly ideal. You do not describe any symptoms, like doggy off the start, can't reach top rpm ever, etc.

Reply back with your speed and rpms at wide open throttle for a better shot at getting good analysis. For best results supply the drive ratio, it may have been changed out in error sometime in the past.

Some things that could be contributing to the problem, this is all I can come up with given the sparse details and light description of the actual symptoms...:

Engine not running at full potential (tune up, fuel delivery, etc.)
Waterlogged flotation foam (adds weight)
Wrong gear ratio in the drive (that engine needs a 1.8-2.0 to 1 ratio)
