hi, i have a 2004 johnson 150hp 2 stroke with about a 100 hours on it that is over heating. when i checked the thermostats the port side stat was clean but the starboard side was full of sand. so flushed the head and replaced the both stats. i just when for a ride and the boat ran fine for until i went over 4000rpms. i was only able to steam for about 5 min at that point until the hot alarm sounded. when i got back to the dock i pulled both stats again. the starboard side still and a little (2 particles) of sand at base of the stat. my question is how do go about cleaning ALL the sand that is built up in the motor out? or could it be another reason for the overheat. i am assuming that its the sand cloging up the thermostats which is making it over heat. any help is greatly appreciated .

Or maybe you have a water pump that is chewed up from too much sand.

Once on plane, the pressure relief valves should flood the engine with cool water. How did these look when you have the thermostat covers off? If you are going to check the impeller, check the passage from the lower unit intake holes up to the bottom of the pump.
