1988 mercury 9.9 runs then doesn't

help?

i have a 20 yr. old 9.9 mercury outboard (1987-1989) that has had very little use. starts and runs fine for about 3-5 minutes. then only runs at about 1/3 speed. then stops and won't restart.

i checked spark plugs, fuel, fuel filter etc

"O" ring at fuel filter leaks very slightly but i doubt that would cause this.

could it be an electronic control part? that's what someone told me but he was trying to sell me on a $400 repair. any other suggestions??

When it stops have you checked both cyls. for spark and when it slows are you checking the water flow and have you tried to pump the bulb?
