Just bought a used boat with a 70 Evinrude motor,well I cleaned the carbs and changed the plugs due to the fact that the boat had been sitting for 1 year,so I got it to fire up,well it runs good but when I put it in forward or reverse it dies.Even though I did get it to run 30mph once or twice . I thank you to those that have any info that you are willing to share.

you idle speed is too low. idle in gear in the water, should be set at 650-750 rpms. it will idle higher on muffs. as then there is no back pressure on the exhaust.

also next time, put part of your problem in your title.
