I need to replace the gimbal bearing in my 1971 Mercruiser. No water intrusion. There is no way to lubricate it without pulling it out. No grease fitting for it. The bearing was installed by a marine mechanic about 4 years ago. The snap ring was not reinstalled. Is the snap ring needed? Is the new replacement bearing same as the Alpha? If it is I can use my old bearing driver. The bearing was installed so that the inner part can't be rotated and removed for lubrication. Can it be installed facing the other way?

Re: Mercruiser 165 gimbal bearing

Thank you for the help so far. I just checked on this site for bearings. There are 2 by Sierra. 18-2100 & 18-2101. My boat is a 1971 with original transom assembly and gimbal housing. Sorry,no serial numbers. There are no trim senders on the hinge pins. One bearing is for models with trim sending and the other without. I'm probably looking in the wrong place for this. Anyhow, how can it be determined which one is correct?

Re: Mercruiser 165 gimbal bearing

i just went to my local merc store and had them pick out the right one, per my serial # on my drive.........

have ya looked at mercstuff.com. under the how to's? it will show ya the two different types....... one note. don't just replace the brg only..... as per the merc service bullitin. the brg and carrier are a matched set....

ya could go to some of them sites that got mercruiser parts application brakedowns. stemtostern, dougrussell, etc. and get yer merc # then cross it to the serria......

Pulled the gimbal bearing today in between x-mas shopping. It looks same as bearing for an Alpha. It has a tolerance ring . Just curious how the other style bearing is installed. I think the last year used was 69. The bearing uses some kind of shim instead of a tolerance ring.
