Hi everyone. I'm glade to be here. :D
I just bought a 91 mod sea ray with what I believe is an 91 130hp blackmax.
I guess ill start here. The boat cranked and ran great the first time I took it out. No issues what so ever the hole day.
The second time I took it out (water temp was in the mid 60's as was the Air temp) it was a cold day to say the least; anyway it was a little hard to start as i assumed it would be but it ran fine. Stopped and fished for 30 to 1 hr and was even harder to start, but ran fine. No biggey. Then stopped for a 3rd time for another hour or so and it was really hard to start - took 15 min or so. But ran fine again.
The 3rd time I tried to start it I flooded it to see if I could smell gas and I did
so I really don’t understand what’s wrong. Please help as im new to this, and really cant afford to put allot of money into the boat.
Also it would sputter a little sometimes when idling. (Sometimes)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you please describe your start-up procedure in detail.
Do you use the same procedure every time, or do you use one procedure for the first start-up in the morning, and another procedure for the rest of the day?

Mercs tend to be very cold blooded and need lots of choke to get started when cold. Failure to use the fast idle lever is another issue people tend to overlook. Carbed engines generally don't have an automatic choke or fast idle mechanism to help with warm or cold starts. As a society we've become so spoiled by getting in our cars, turning the key and the engine runs. In the good old days it was do a tap dance on the accelerator, pull the choke knob, pull out the throttle knob a little, step on the starter and then adjust everything. Your outboard is essentially a throwback to those days.
1) Squeeze the primer bulb until firm (cold engine -- first start of the day)
2) Turn key to RUN (not START). Push and hold the key in for a count of eight.
3) Raise fast idle lever.
4) Turn key to START.
5) When engine fires, be prepared to reduce the idle a little and be ready to push the key in momentarily if the engine begins to slow and seem like it wants to die.
6) When a stable idle is achieved, lower the fast idle lever.

You will get all sorts of comments about the RUN and eight count concept and you can either take it or leave it. But -- if you don't use that technique, you need to use plenty of choke while cranking.

On a hot/warm start, raise the fast idle lever to give the engine a little extra air. That's what the lever is for. Some engines need it, some don't. Use whatever works for you. Of course none of this is worth anything unless you have the engine tuned properly and the fuel system is functioning as it should.

Re: 91 130hp blackmax Merc Starting isues

On a cold engine, pump the primer tight, (but not nutcracker tight) raise fast idle, hold enricher for about 5 seconds, and crank while holding enricher. In 80 degree water will start in 2 seconds, in 50 degree water will start just after the oil slick starts forming. I have to keep bumping the enricher to keep it lit for about 10 seconds till the water jacker warms up.

After running, on warm day, I just bump the starter. If it doesn't start in 2 seconds, I raise the fast idle, and bump the enricher and crank for a second and it's off. On a cold day, fast idle, crank on the enricher maybe for 5 seconds.

I find that I need to level the motor to have it start reliably. I always put it to the same position on the trim indicator, motor dead level.

If it's giving me fits, spark plugs usually fix it.

These motors seem to have a personality. It may take a while to learn to get along with yours. That's pretty normal.

hope it helps
