I have an 88 hp evinrude that I use during the summer only on the gulf coast in saltwater. Would it be ok to remove the thermostats and leave them out?

they might stick and cause an overheat. I was thinking of replacing them but had the thought of just leaving them out.

bill,on those older 4 cyl.engines, some here in the keys will take the old thermos and gut them ,putting the top back to give some resistance,by insuring a no sieze up or plug up,its a bear getting at those thermos, you can cut the plunger rod and the two side arm type pieces ,cut just before they connect to the round part that the plunger goes through, leaving the arms helps in the installation,we have had no problemin the warm water here,i doubt you will,I do know many guys let them out,but believe the cooler running gave idle issues

Yea, mine doesnt idle very good. But I think my problem is more "timing" related. I put in a thermostat and it didnt idle any better and would just overheat when running at faster speeds. Boat runs great without it....minus the slight problem of idling and going in and out of gear/neutral. Im still trying to figure out what the problem is.

running hot can clearly indicate a timing problem. It should run better with the thermostat in as it is warmed up to the proper operating temp.
