Changed the impeller on 1997 Force 120hp. The stream of water from pee hole was weak from the get-go. After running for approx. 10 minutes the stream stopped. What's going on?

You might have installed it backwards, IE: the rubber was going the wrong way.
That would show small stream and they don't last long that way either.

I was told by the local marina that once they're installed, they 'self-right'. Is this not the case?

I don't know about the newer one's, but the one's I've seen, there isn't much room for them to turn themselves in there.

Did you remember to replace the key on the shaft? When you installed the new impeller, did you make sure the key did not slip out of position? A loose key rattling around in there will chop up a new impeller in short order. Next time you replace it: Insert the key, then slide down the impeller over it. Lubricate with soap or dish detergent and slide down the pump case while turning the shaft in the correct direction. The case will work right on, no problem and you will have been able to see that the key stayed correctly positioned.

By the way, that small key costs 7 bucks and it's never in stock-- you must order it.

Re: New impeller didn't last long!

Just a note here, these motors don't take kindly to running on ear muffs, usually to get the water flowing out the twin exhaust outlets, you gotta drop it in the water. With that said I just replaced my impeller with the kit, because after excessive cranking trying to set the timing in the driveway, I never thought to turn on the water,,, Duh! and when I finally had it set, and ran it on the muffs, my overheat alarm went off! after taking it apart, the impeller didn't look new, but didn't look so bad? but the housing looked a little mottled inside (eaten away), and the key looked slightly crushed, even tho it all was perfectly usable, (why didn't I get flow then?) So I went with the kit, I saw the price of the stainless key, but you know what? It was INCLUDED in the kit, along with a new housing, and a new seal built right in. It pumps water like gangbusters now! By the way, I was surprised not to find the housing with a stainless liner?, as I've found on other water pumps, don't remember if it was OMC, or Mercruiser, tho? maybe both.

Finally received parts. Now,how do i know which way the impeller is supposed to be installed in the water pump housing. I don't want to re-install backwards again, if it is in backwards.

Place impeller key on drive shaft. Put impeller on impeller key, lower water pump down onto impeller. While slowly turning the drive shaft clockwise push down with firm pressure on the water pump till it seats all the way down.

Re: New impeller didn't last long!

I just had a bad time with my impeller, found out it was the wrong part number also. Wish I would have read this line of posts before.
Now for a new impeller and key. :-( BOOHOO.
