Hi I really hope someone can help me, I have recently bought this outboard. I thought by unscrewing the screw at the top of the casing, it would let me into the engine underneath, I know know that was a big mistake (what an idiot i had an Ailsa Craig before that just clipped off) as i can not get the pull cord to return, Obviously i have made a serious mistake.
Can someone please help an idiot?::confused:
Thanks
Dale

I know if you try to attempt replacing the string, it can be very dangerous without (or even with for that matter) a manual. You should definately wear safety glasses and gloves, and either have an experienced friend help, or have a manual with you. There are probably some on here that can send you instructions on how to do this, but make sure you wear the safety glasses, you may not have any trouble, but in case you do you'll be glad you're prepared. Thanks for reply, the most frustrating thing is i can not even still get into the top part of the casing. I have got the bottom part off, but cant seem to find the screws clips to get the top part off.
What a Day there was nothing wrong with it until I touched it.

What model is your Johnson? Doesn't sound familiar to me. Must be a fairly new one?

Not really. My guess is that it is an European motor, made in Belgium. Normal for you though.

Re: Johnson 4hp Sea horse Pull cord problem

yep, 1983 made in Belgium BRP's website shows a lower engine cover, apparently held by two screws, fore and aft. and it seems to look like it woud drop down after removing those two (?). Then, above that there is an intermediate cover, bolted to the engine. The recoil starter is held to the intermediate cover by four screws coming up from below.

All I know is what I see in the picture.
