I'm buying a 1991 Skeeter SD 80 boat from a friend the boat is 15 ft long and has a Mercury 50 hp outboard on it the only info i got off the motor is i believe it is an m50E possible serial # is 0D012764 or M 018959. The problem that I am experiencing is when you go full throttle it will not plane out it will take for ever for it to plane or I have to have a rider sit forward to get it to plane. While its trying to plane th RPMs will sit a 2000 till it finally planes out then the boat will go faster after plane but while trying to plane can only go about 5-6 mph The boat after plane will reach 35-40 MPH with full load and 2 passengers. Is this a prop isssue or may ther be something else it just seems as the motor just cant push it out of the water. My buddy thiks its the prop but I would like to get a pros opinion before looking for props Thanks for your help BTW the prop on ther now is an aluminum prop only markigs on there is a 15 I also tried a prop which came with the boat and it was aluminum witha 17 stamped on it

Re: Need Help Please!!!

The engine is a 1991. I'd check compression on all cylinders, should be over 100 and within 10% of each other. Also check spark at all cylinders. Could be the carbs need a good cleaning and rebuild as well. Check the lower unit oil and see if it's milky or clean. Milky means water in the oil and that's bad. What are the RPMs at WOT (wide open throttle)? The 15 and 17 most likely are the pitch of the prop.

And Welcome to iboats!!!

Has the boat been stored outside? If so, there could be several hundred pounds of waterlogged foam under the floor. Just a thought:)

Re: Need Help Please!!!

does it have tilt trim controls? if not the pin may need to be adjusted for the load. if it performs way better with one person and light load, then the prop might be too high a pitch.

Re: Need Help Please!!!

WOT rpms are some where around 4000, No the boat has not been stored outside always in garage when not in use and covered with boat cover if outside so I dont think water logged foam is the issue. Yes it has trim controls. As far as compression and spark I'll have compression checked and spark also. Will also check lower unit oil and get back to you on that
