I have a 1985 force 85Hp that has some troubles. The engine is miss-firing when idling as well as bogging. It will start and idle, but when I open the throttle it wants to die. I have found that opening the throttle and then tapping the electric choke will cause the engine to get up to proper RPM's. So I replaced the fuel pump with no improvement in performance. I also replaced the plugs with UL18V's, no improvement. Today the engine ran better than ever for a short time, when I opened the throttle the engine just too off. Also my rpms made there way to 5K, until today I have only seen the high 3K range. Later however the engine began acting as before, lower rpm's and bogging except while using the choke on and off. Lastly, the carbs were rebuilt last year. I have read that the fuel bulb should go flat when running, is this true? Help...

If the fuel bulb goes flat, you have a restriction in the line before it. Are you opening the vent on the portable tank? If a permanent tank, is the vent clogged? check the male quick connect fuel fitting. Crap gets stuck in behind the spring and clogs the fitting. Look in the hole in the threaded end and use a toothpick to scrape out the junk. Push in the ball with a toothpick and blow out the fitting.
Also check to see that the low speed needles in the carbs are set rich enough. all three should be set equally and a MINIMUM of 3/4 turn out from lightly seated. Spitting at idle and dieing upon acceleration are symptoms of lean running either due to too lean a setting or lack of fuel.

I will try the carb tune and give an update.
