new merc 2 stroke starting problems

Hi guys - a buddy of mine just bought a new boat and motor. IT's an 8(?) horse rope start mercury 2 stroke.

It's starts up fine when the choke is on and runs. But as soon as you turn off the choke, it dies. We've tried letting it idle for almost 10 min on choke to warm up the motor but still - same problem. We've also dumped the gas and refilled.

The motor only has about 6 hours on it. It's been raining here for about a week so we haven't run it, but it ran fine last time out.

Any ideas?

if it's new don't screw with it. take it to the dealer.. you could void any warranty.

outside of messing with it....i would still like to know what could cause a brand new motor to not work.

Someone mentioned the gas tank vent valve. We're going to try that in the morning.

Are there any other obvious things that we could be missing (without opening up the internals...)?
