Alpha 1 Gen 2 Upper unit oil seal

I need to replace the oil seal in the upper unit of my 1995 Mercruiser Alpha 1 (Gen 2) out drive. Upper unit is still attached to boat (lower unit is removed).
How do I access the seal? It is at the bottom of the short driveshaft, and I can't reach the pinion nut to remove the pinion. Is this a service-shop-only repair?

You can't do it with it on the boat. You have to remove the ujoint shaft and bearing/gear assembly as a unit in order to get to the seal.
