Purchased in May of this year a NEW 25Hp EL Merc from a local Bass Pro Shops outlet. Love the motor but has developed a problem. Broke in the engine as recommended in the book and by dealer (same procedure). Now, after initial start-up and warm-up, I'll engage tiller to fwd, troll down the channel then slowly accellerate. When I do, the engine sputters for approx 10 to 15 seconds then smooths out. After, it then runs perfectly fine across all speed ranges. However, If I back the throttle down and move at just above idle speeds for approx 2- 5 minuites or longer, then accellerate, the engine will sputter again and smoth out once more.

Worse yet, if I hammer ther throttle after this brief idle (troll) period, it hesitates, stumbles, then accelerates to top speed. Please note that if I vary the trottle and avoid the constant slower speeds, the motor performs fine. It will ide and/or stay at high speeds without a problem whatsoever. Its the slower speeds at zero to 1/4 throttle where this problem occurrs (and hence the following acceleration).

Finally, one last symptom... If at top speed I then cut the throttle back to zero.. quickly..the engine will "Spit" once or twice before settling down to an idle (troll).

Previously had a 15hp Johnson on same boat for years (14' Smoker Craft) and was a beautiful running motor. Had one same problem in that after start up it did sputter on accelleration but once warm, it was FLAWLESS! - I miss that motor!

This is a regrettable problem as I was consiering a Yamaha - as per everyones recommendation - but wanted to buy American. Suggestions? I am very mechanically inclined but due to the age of the motor, I wanted to ask first. Note also I always have fresh fuel. Problem is same with low or high octane fuel as well.

My Guess?:
1.) Fouled Plugs
2.) Carb Setting
3.) Defective Motor!

Will get the manual from the local library, but what type of adjustments are available on the carb? Low and High jets/speed? Also, would take to dealer but warranty is out!! 90 day only.:'(

I wonder what would happen if you ran a can of engine cleaner through it?

If the engine was brand new, don't you have a 3 year warranty?

OK... just dug out the warranty card. Covered until May '07. However... its always good to put the mind at rest to know what MIGHT be wrong... before you go to the dealer for a repair. Would anyone still be willing to make a guess?? TX!!

Its almost broken...thanks for the comment... I guess. All you have to do is read some of the threads in this forum (other forums as well) and you can see that anyone doesnt have to look all that far to note that their are all too many dealer nightmares! I dont really have that much faith in them. Sorry. Perhaps you are one of them? If so, you proved my point with your comment. :/.

A family member took a mercruiser lower unit to a local dealer and he built the entire thing WRONG!! What an absulute wase of money and time, not to mention the fight to get it done correctly.

For those serious, I am looking to a solution for edification purposed before I take it to the dealer. THANKS!

RMA.

Were the tank and fuel lines new with the motor?
Does the primer bulb work and stay tight?

Trying siphoning out gas from the "bottom" of the tank into a glass jar. Water will settle to the bottom in seconds. If so, get a fuel additive from the dealer that absorbs water in fuel.

Outside of that, your looking at motor work.

CF... THANK YOU for your response. Yes... all was brand new in May of this year. I am heading to the lake this weekend and will check the plugs and the fuel tank, hoses, and all fuel components. Its almost empty anyway. I'll refill and then check on the bulb pressure as well.

RMA.

Alright, before filling-up, dump that gas and check it for water as I suggested.

No water in the gas. Also, plugs looked brown on the porcelain and the tip/electrode as well, but had carbon on the base. Took the plugs to a Merc repair center. Known the guy for years! Said the tips of the plugs were ok but he didnt like the carbon at the base. Said also that my symptoms are tough to troubleshoot let alone repair, and Merc doesnt pay for the hours it may take to troubleshoot, just for the parts involved in the repair... and then some labor.

Ran a can of Sea Foam through tank anyway and used fresh gas and Quicksilver premium oil in mixture. Its actually getting worse! Idle and high end still OK. Just when moving along at idle to just under 1/4 throttle.

Will take to dealer to get fixed but will sell and get a Yamaha. I give up on American garbage. Typical American mantra... web page and TV comercials talk about quality, but the only quality is on the pay package that goes to the corporate officers. Oh, wait... I see that Merc offers an extended warranty for a few hundred more. HAH! Right. Pay more to ensure the quality, I THINK NOT! Thank God for foreign competition. Yamaha here I come!!

Signed,

Disgusted.
