I am baffled...
I have recently bought a 89 50hp force which has been sitting dormant for 3-4yrs. Prior to start I = check compression 179 and 180, replaced gas tank, gas lines, check filter, replace fuel pump, clean/inspect carb and replace impeller.
Motor starts nice, and runs nice when I have my hand over the carb intake opening. However once I remove my hand or not choke carb the motor will not idle. I have adjusted the idle screw and still will not idle.
I am completley baffled...everyone tells me I have an air leak, however I have no idea where?

Please HELP?

Re: 89 Force 50hp Idle Problems

from you description you carb is running lean. If you remove the carb remove the idle mixture screw. Where the tip of that screw was you will see three small holes going into the carb. Above these three tiny holes there should be a welsh plug. If you take carb cleaner and inject it into the hole where the idle adjust screw was then find the three tiny holes inside the carb and clean them out with thin piece of wire then blow the holes with compressed air from the carb so the air flow goes out the screw hole. Now replace the screw and spring you removed and re set it back to 1 1/4 turn counter clockwise from gently seated.

It may clean the crap out or it may not. The best way is to remove that welsh plug and clean the holes from there then replace it with a new one. Problem with this is if you do it wrong you can damage the carb punching out the welsh plug.

Re: 89 Force 50hp Idle Problems

When I bought the carb kit I noticed the new welsh plug, but was scared to change. I will have a look at it this over the next couple of days and advise the outcome. I have recently order and waiting for it to arrive a base gasket for between the carb and the intake, and also a new mixture screw as I noticed the end wasn't perfect. Got a hunch there might of been some dirt/crud in there to cause the end to bur over? I will remove the welsh plug and tear apart the carb again to see what I can find and advise.
Eurolarva I couldn't agree with you more, as I said above everyone is telling me I have an air problem, however I think it is air/fuel mix problem!!!

Many Thanks I will give this a try.

Re: 89 Force 50hp Idle Problems

Eurolarva last night I removed the carb and began the dismantle/rebuild. I noticed when I removed the welsh plug there was actually 5 little holes behind. Three in a triangle shape, and 2 other behind? Should there be this many? Other than that everything else looks good and clean, I currently am soaking the carb trying to clean off an deposits that may still be hanging on?

Different carbs were used with different motors. 5 holes maybe correct. I have had so many small engine carbs apart it is hard to keep them straight. Use a thin wire to clean those holes however do not use anything stiff that might enlarge the holes. Watch close for gum or varnish
