When the engine is cold it starts within three or four pulls, but it is difficult or impossible to start when warm. When the enigne is running it emits quite a bit of smoke.

Make sure that you are mixing at 50:1. You might be flooding it when you go to restart by having your throttle too much forward. Do you need to choke it when it is cold to start on your three or four pulls? Have you tried one pull on choke when it is warm and then push it in and try again? When it does restart warm does it run fine? If it does then it has to be a starting procedure. Every engine seems to have it's own and maybe you haven't quite found it's. Sometimes they are like women, you think they want one thing and it turns out to be something else and they won't tell you.
