My motor was running fine all day until I started it up after making a pitstop. Once we arrived at our spot, I turned the ignition off. I heard a loud humming noise coming from the engine and discovered it was the starter making the noise. The pinion was down but it was still making noise. I tried pulling the kill switch but it kept running. I disconnected the battery and this stopped it. Back at the dock I hooked the battery back up and this time the motor kept turning over, (ignition off, kill switch pulled). I had to disconnect the starter leads b4 I could trim up th engine and trailer it home.

Re: Motor keeps cranking

You have a stuck starter solenoid or a bad ignition switch. If the small wire on the solenoid has 12V on it when the key is in the RUN (not START) position, the ignition switch is bad. If not and the problem is still there, the solenoid is bad. Tap on it with a wrench to see if it will unstick. Whether or not it does you still need to replace it.
