I was winterizing my boat this weekend. When draining my lower unit, I discoverd that the volume of the total drain contained 5%- 10% water. I know this means I need a seal job.....

But before jumping to that conclusion, my boat was laid up in the shop for 7 weeks this sommer for a fuel problem that they had trouble diagnosing..... They disassembled the lower unit during this time because they thought the surging problem could of been gear related.... WASNT.... it was a quality problem in the carbs from the manufacturing plant.. Anyway that was corrected...

They had my boat on and off the water for several weeks.... When I got it back, I went over all of the nuts and bolts on the entire motor (before I put it in the water). I found a LOOSE LEU bolt that could have been removed just using my fingers. Thats the only loose one found on the motor. The marina had my boat on the water the day I received my boat back and found this loose bolt. The other 3 bolts on the LEU and the two bolts connecting the prop housing assembly were all tight. I torqued the loose bolt according to the Mercury spec.. It was tight and I enjoied my summer fishing!

SO ... my my point is... I am inclined (since my boat is winterized and the LUE is 100% oil) to just wait till April, run it hard on the water on the first day out and check the lower unit by changing the lube and looking for water then...

Yeah, I know the marina was a bunch of bobbleheads and idiots... no need to beat them up any further
...

Your thoughts on my plan of waiting and running or if you know a bit about the motors, should I just take it in...? The oil was dark amber (same color that went in).

Thanks for your help

Chip
