STUCK IN FOWARD GEAR

1979 mercury 500 i put in a new water pump now im in foward gear no other gears what did i do wrong

You forgot to lineup the shift shafts before installing the unit, make sure they are both in the same gear

how do i tell if they are lined up or not the lower half feels like its in gear before installing it

You need to lineup your shift shafts and make sure the lower half & the controls are in the same position.<br />Example: lower end in forward gear, controller in forward position.<br />To find out what position(gear) the lower end is in follow these steps.<br />Neutral: prop should spin freely in both directions.<br />Forward Gear: prop should NOT spin counterclockwise.<br />Reverse Gear: prop should be free to turn in either direction ONLY about 1/3 turn.<br /><br />You'll have to drop your lower end to get thing's aligned properly.<br /><br />Good Luck!
