Mercury 7.5 no spark

I have a 7.5 merc ser. # 5848372, that died at idle.
Since then, there is no spark to either cyl. It went suddenly, so I suspect the primary ignition. I checked the stator and trigger with a VOM and the two coils of the stator were the same. approx 820 ohms each. total is approx 1700. The trigger resistance is 140 ohms. The readings are good according to the manual I have. I also checked the ac output of the stator and trigger using the record max func. of the dvm. The stator output is 52v and the trigger output is 2v. These are using the manual start cord. My question is: are these outputs ok and am I looking at a bad switch box? Any help is appreciated. I am an auto tech. but not too much on outboards.

Check every wire that shouldn't be grounded and see if they are. Check your kill switch to see if it's grounding. There are two wires that sit very close to the throttle sytem below the flywheel that have given me trouble by rubbing off the insulation and grounding on the throttle mechanism.
Eric

Re: Mercury 7.5 no spark

This motor is in excellent cond. and appears to have been stored for a long time. Very clean and all wiring and elect. parts look good. Wiring and coil packs are tight and clean. The only thing I am wondering is the output of the mag and trigger. Is it high enough to charge the capacitor and is the trigger output high enough to switch the output to the coils? The highest reading I could get with the rope starter is 61 Vac and about 2.5v for the trigger. Is this high enough? Are the readings I see in the manuals, 100V and 4V, at idle speed? If so, then I am in the ballpark. I have a few more tricks to try. I'll let you know how it works out.
I'm an old school mechanic from way back. Not used to working on this antique technology. Houston, we have ignition. Well, I installed a cdi switchbox and rechecked for spark. All is normal. Works great. Saved again by the Fluke 88.
