Our 2001 Merc 25 HP 2-Stroke Model 1-025312YD dies after running about 2 minutes at full throttle. Then it doesn't want to start unless I pull out the primer button. I push the primer button back in and once again it will run. I have the gas cap bleed full open and pump the bulb hard before starting.

This has been happening since shortly after we got the motor broken in. I've replaced the gas tank, the hose with primer bulb, the plugs and of course the fuel. Any ideas? Did we buy a lemon?

Tom

Tom, I have the same motor and I discovered that if I turn the choke "primer button" all the way clockwise and then pull the choke out a time or two, and then, with it all the way out...pull and she'll start right up. I listen closely and after about 30 seconds it will start to run a little rough. This is when I push it in to the half way position. I can now put it in gear ad go. I don't know if this makes any sense to you, but it works for me and I really like this motor!

Hi Baybum,

Thanks for the quick response. Well I am feeling really good tonight since our nephew stopped over, who is an airline mechanic. He also has had a Merc and we took the pontoon out to check it out. He was actually able to clear the crud from the carb just by choking it while it was at full throttle. This took a good half hour or more of running around the lake and testing it.

Anyway the problem seems to be solved for now. I plan to keep some seafoam handy for winterizing this fall, and make sure I do it right for a change. Thanks all.

Tom
