I need to change the impeller on my O/B as there is no water through the **** tube.
Do I require any gaskets or special tools/oils etc?

The Mercury O/B is 3yrs old.

I have a 175 so I'm not familiar with the smaller motor. My motor just required Metric sockets , that's all.

You may want to make sure that **** hole isn't clogged with salt. Pull the engine cover off and follow the hose to the engine block. pull the hose off there and start it, see if you get a flow of water.

If so just clean the hose as it exits the engine.

Re: Mercury 4HP 2 stroke impeller change

I have tested the water flow by attaching a supply to the flushing connection. Water flows freely from the **** hole, the centre of the prop and the two smaller outlets just above the prop.

The fault would definately appear to lie with the impellor or its drive mechanism.

I have flushed the engine regularly after use in salt water but I suspect the impellor may have cracked due to cold winter temperatures.

Thanks for your reply.

Could be the thermostate not the impeller better change them both at the same time. Its easy to change the impeller locate all the bolts and disco the shift rod. When its apart get a flashlight and see if your engine uses the rubber crankshaft thingys which can come off the shaft when taking it apart.

disco the shift rod? My impeller (on the same motor) is shot. It will not come off. Do I have to dissasemble the entire gearing system from the propeller up?

simply loosen the bolts on the lower unit (there's sometime a hidden bolt under the anode) and disconnect the shift rod (there's a rotating clip on top of the rod, just under the carb) and then slide down the lower unit.
