Our 1995 Johnson 115 HP outboard no longer has a reverse or neutral position. The motor runs fine in forward, produces no unusual noises, has full power. When placed in Neutral, it crawls ahead as if it's in forward gear at idle. Pull the control back to reverse, and it move forward, with even, smooth acceleration, as if the control is pushed the opposite way. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened? Sounds like an electrical/control problem, not a gearbox problem? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Bill.... At the engine, the shift control cable has a adjustable trunion on the threaded portion of the cable. Check to see if it has somehow jumped out of the clamp socket that normally retains it.

If so, and the clamp face was loose, the solution is obvious. If the clamp face is still tight, it may be necessary to wind a few loops of electrical tape around the trunion to enable a tighter fit.

Hopefully the above pertains to your problem as the solution avoids taking out a second mortgage.

One thing I can think of that might cause the problem is that the bend at the top of the shift shaft is facing backwards instead of frontwards. If hooked to the shift linkage that way it will bind when you try to shift into reverse.

Did this happen all of a sudden or did it start after the gearcase was removed at some time, such as a water pump replacement, or other type of engine service was perfromed, etc.?

It sounds like the shift cable could be broken.
