Hi all, Great Site here. I got a 196? big twin 40 short. Model #40453S last year. Ran great from Aug-0ct. got ready to winterize it when I unscrewed the pivet pin instead of the drain plug. Needless to say I felt pretty stupid by not getting on my back and finding the real drain plug. This year I thought I had the holes lined up and was able to put the pin back in. Got to the dock and all I had was reverse gear."would had been happier if I had only forward." Problem is I can always line the holes up and screw the pin in and when I think everything is ok ,I wind up in reverse. Is there a trick in this or something? Im in maine so boating season isnt very long.Any Help would be great. Thanks

Re: Big Twin, Pulled pivet pin by mistake

Welcome to Iboats!

The thing that the pivot screw fits through fits into a little yolk shaped thing that acts on the clutch dog. I think it might have come free of that yolk.

I think the ultimate solution will be to pop off the cap (where the skedge attaches) and reasemble things properly. Naturally, you'll need to remove the lower unit first so you can work upside-down, and you'll need to replace the "spagetti" seal and the o-ring on the seal carrier. Cover both those in sealant before reassembling.

It might be worth poping off the lower unit and trying to line up everything proper again a few times, but if you've had it then pull the cap. :)

Sorry for the crummy answer!

When you have the gearcase off you might want to give this a try. It has worked for me in the past to replace the pivot pin removed by some of my customers. Drain all the lube(if it is not completely drained from removing the pin), lay the gearcase on its side(with the pivot pin hole facing up) move the shift shaft(you should be able to see where the pivot pin goes through the shifter) and align the hoke in the shifter with the pivot pin hoe in the gearcase. Use of a pick or small awl is helpful. Good luck!

I agree with papasmurf, although I have aligned the shift mechanism without removing the lower unit. Put one hand on the shift lever (disconnect from the cable) have one eye looking into the hole, and move the lever until the holes are almost aligned. Shove the icepick in the hole and complete the alignment. Now install the pin.
