Outboard removal

I will be attempting to move my outboard from the pontoon to the stand that I just built for it. Just wondering it there are any tips that may help me avoid anything disasterous. My plan is to either somehow attach the motor to the bucket of the tractor and lift it with that, or pull it up under my shed and attach to a joist and lift it with a come along. I took the cover off of the outboard to see if there are any mounting points that I can attach to, but was unable to find anything sufficient.

Should I just wrap a tow strap under the power head between the bracked and the midsection?

Will the power tilt unit and outboard come off as one piece?

I'm thinking I should attempt to leave all wires and throttle/steering cables attached. I've never removed an outboard before, so I thought this might be easier the having to disconnect and reconnect everything.

They have lifting eyes specific to your engine and you should get one of those or make one that will work, you want to be carefull lifting that so you don't damage it.

Somewhere on the flywheel there should be a threaded hole or holes for the eye.

I use the rafters for my engine lifting. I have 3 2x6's glued together that I lay across 4 rafters to spread the load to be EXTRA safe. Usually it isn't too tough to remove the cables but the wiring harness may require removing extra panels and such.

Sorry, I assumed everyone would just look in my sig for that info. It is an '89 60 HP Mercury.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look around at Harbor Freight and see if I can find anything to attach to the flywheel.

I should have. Merc has used the same lift ring for years. Probably can borrow one from local marine dealer or buy one pretty cheap. Threads into the top of the flywheel. Best and safest and easiest way to lift the motor.

Won't find anything at harbor freight that will work. Work right that is.

The interesting thing is, that even though Merc specs using a lifting ring that screws into the flywheel, there are ALSO two lifting points built into the motor. I don't see why the ring is necessary, when you have those. That 60 is pretty heavy, but my 115 is about 400 pounds! I'm sure my cherry-picker can handle that!

Got the motor off with no problems. I was able to create a lifting eye out of a $12 bolt puller kit and an eye bolt. I bought a 500 lb ratcheting hoist for $40 and attached it to my garage rafters. Thanks again for the advice.
