The gear ratio is what may be different. I can't remember for sure but i think the 4.3 and the 5.0 were different ratios.I know the 5.7 was different.

Unfortunately it will require a gear change in the outdrive and its going to cost almost as much as a new drive to buy the parts and the labor to do it.![]()
Your 4.3 final drive ratio is 1.68:1
5.0 final drive ratio is 1.59:1
The gearing is done through the upper section of the drive, the gears are the same in the lower sections.
I'll bet theres a ton of people that have done that swap, with the right prop you may get it in the peak opereating range, I don't know anyone that has first hand experience but I would do it if thats all I had.
