I'm new to iBoats and the forums...go easy on me. I've just replaced the Spitfire EEM on my 1996 OMC 7.4L (744DPHU) engine with a new (in the box) module purchased on eBay from a marine supply house (I've read all about the problems with this ignition system but didn't want to go to the trouble and expense of converting to HEI...the Spitfire has worked flawlessly for 15 years). A local mechanic who used to work on this engine years ago told me the timing should be set at TDC (0 degrees). I'm trying to figure out how this is done. The boat is miles away and I was hoping somebody could tell me whether this is a simple mechanical thing or whether I'm going to need special tools/equipment, i.e., timing light? Any information would be appreciated.
The timing on the EEM systems is 10° BTDC and are not adjustable. You can verify the idle timing and advance timing, but nothing you can do about it. So in that respect, it's a really simple procedure.
