OMC Cobra Lower Unit Rebuild

My outdrive makes an excessive when putting it into gear. the tech adjusted the shift linkage, but the problem persists. Probably the clutch dogs, he says. My question: is this something the average guy can do himself, and can it be done without removing the entire lower unit?

What is the neutral and in gear idle RPM? What control are you using? Are you making an effort to shift slow?Good luck!
