johnson ficht 150 vs honda 4-stroke 90

Hi again solittle,I finally decide to keep my motor (Johnson ficht 150 hp 1998 with all upgrades) and change the powerhead and pistons with new. Yesterday I had this offer. To trade my engine with a brand new Honda 4-stroke 90HP no extra cost. (My engine is 3 years old with 535 hrs – never had a problem until it blow the piston.).My question is.. Keep my Johnson (they offer my one-year warranty for the new block) or proceed with the trade? (My boat is inflatable 5.90 meters)I would appreciate your opinion.Thanks in advance

I would not buy a FICHT motor of that period no matter what condition based on the reports from many knowledgeable wrenches who post here. - - - If it can free and delivered I might reconsider. The sense seems to be that it is not if they will break it is when. I don't like that kind of risk.The Honda 4-strokes have an excellent reputation but I can't vouch for them personally as I have never owned one. From what I read here if your boat will give you the performance you are looking for then the 90 is the motor of choice (you did not indicate in this post what boat you have). I would think that the 90 should give satisfactory performance on an 18' or less average weight FG hull. If yours is bigger you might want to see if your dealer could find something with more kick than a 90 if you kick in a few bucks.

So long as service and parts are available locally, it sounds like a great opportunity. I've never owned either motor but it is true the ficht does not have an excellent reputation. This is for the same price as the repairs on the Ficht? I probably would not hesitate! It might go a bit slower but it should keep on going for much longer with fewer problems. Probably use less fuel as well.That is one big inflatable! ~18 feet. Must be rigid hull type?

That 90 is just over 1/2 the horsepower. Can you lose that much?
