Default 60 hp 1980's mercury outboard.

I bought a hobo house boat with a 60 hp merc. The control box doesn't have a tilt/trim button. I had to go into the outboard motor and cross circuit the wires to get the tilt motor to lift, so that I could trailer it. The remote control box is single lever and has a "multi-pin" cable with a separate "ground" wire that comes off the multi pin cable. Is this extra cable for trim or what? Any hints? toldland

What color is the extra wire? If its orange, it would go to a mercury tilt switch to disable the ignition when the engine is tilted upwards.Tilt/trim wires are normally blue and green, but if you don't have the switch at the helm it is unlikely you'll see them on the harness. They are 'separate' wires on my harness connector.
