Default 1987 - 50 hp Force Coil Getting Hot!?

I just purchased this motor on a 25' pontoon boat. Boat has not been used that much in the last 5 years due to owner having a stroke now I'm having a fit wondering why this o/b is not running up to par. I replaced spark plugs this spring and it seemed to be running much better. Last weekend it died on me and I found that the upper coil was cracked all the way around. Thought I had found the problem so I picked up another one from a friend...replaced it I noticed that this one is also starting to crack. The coil felt super heated...very very hot to touch. Any ideas on what could be causing this situation? Thanks in advance.
